Kyler Turns 10

One of my favorite people turned 10 last month!  Kyler is one of the most unique boys you'll ever meet. I love being his mom. One of my piano students informed me that he is the "coolest kid in fourth grade." I couldn't agree more.

In his own words, here's a look at Kyler at age 10:
* Favorite Color: Yellow
* Favorite Food: That thing I get at Cafe Rio
* Dream Job: Motorbiker
* Best Friend: Zach Warner
* Something that scares you: Being buried alive
* Something that makes you laugh: My Mom and Dad
* Something that gets you excited: Going on a trip
* Something you wish you had: Human sized hamster ball
* Something you're good at: Skiing
* Favorite Book: Hunger Games
* Favorite Season: Winter
* Favorite holiday: Christmas
* Favorite school subject: Math
* Favorite Primary song: "Choose the Right"
* Favorite thing to do: Play with my family
* Something you'd like to learn: More math
* Something you'd like to see: Disneyland
* Worst day of your life: Future day I die.
* Best day of your life: The day I was born.
* Something you know is true: The scriptures

And in my own words, here are a few of my favorite things about Kyler:
* I love that he shares every treat he ever receives.
* I love that he gets laughing so hard sometimes that he turns red and has to gasp for air.
* I love that he is driven. Whether it be winning a race or getting a good grade, he gives it every thing he has.
* I love that he has a sensitive heart. He takes people's feelings very seriously.
* I love that he is dependable. I trust him completely.
* I love that his primary and school teachers always tell me that he is the best kid ever. ('Cuz he is.)

And finally, here are some pictures from Kyler's birthday. His birthday wish was to spend the day with his favorite buddy. His awesome Dad (whom Ky inherited his awesomeness from) took the day off work to give Kyler the funnest day ever.

Happy Birthday, Ky!

The Provo Competition

Yes, another ballroom post. (With more to come, I'm afraid.) We are learning that if you even dabble your toes in the ballroom world, it quickly takes over your life. Last month, we attended our first "away" competition in Provo. In those two days, I learned a few things:

1. While these young kiddies are dancing all day, the real ones in pain are not the dancers. It's the mothers on the bleachers from 7 a.m.-11 p.m. Padding for the booty is a MUST.

2. As much as you love dance, after about six hours of ballroom, you start to hate it.

3. You are only as good as your partner. A mediocre girl with a better than average boy wins every time.

4. More hair gel.  More make-up. Always.

5. It's amazing how well you get to know the person beside you on a bleacher after 12 hours. It was really weird when I realized I was sharing chips, cookies, and secrets with a person whose name I didn't even know.

Yes, I didn't love the two-day dance marathon, but I have loved this year of ballroom for my daughter because SHE has loved it so much. She has made good friends and learned so much.

Pre-teen Gold--McKenna's team.

 On the evening of the first night, the most exciting thing that could ever happen to a gymnasium full of ballroom dancers--happened.

Derek Hough decided to drop by.

Um, yes... THE Derek Hough from Dancing with the Stars. The Mormon one. The best dancer on the show one.  I think I've always had a pretty level head when it comes to celebrities. They wake up ugly and stinky like everybody else. I get it. But, for some reason, when I saw him across the way, I turned into a giddy, 12 year-old-Beiber-like fan. Not going to lie... I was totally STAR STRUCK.
Here is McKenna "touching" him.

  And here is Derek Hough's back. (I'll spare you from all of the other angles. Unless you want them. Call me.)

Another exciting moment came when McKenna and partner Andrew won first place in Elementary Swing. I guess this is pretty awesome at a regional competition. And it was, considering that we didn't even have many other second rounds all day. McKenna, as you can clearly see, was surprised/ecstatic/over-the-moon happy! And this girl, can I just tell you, is tough as nails. She was up the entire night before in our hotel throwing up with the stomach flu. Throughout the second day, she was physically weak from her rough night, but it never showed. I was so proud of her!

Carson Takes the Dance Floor (By Storm)!

 It started with his love of his costumes.
If I hadn't taken him to Kenna's dance dress rehearsal last year, I would not be blogging about this right now.
But it happened.
Costumes... Carson... Dance.
However, had it not happened, I would not be giving you the, hands-down, cutest set of pictures of all time.

This is Carson's first ballroom competition:
Move over sister! Number 366 is about to rock it, Cha-Cha style!

Future Derek and Julianne Hough

The morning goes like this. I am combing Carson's hair.
Me: "Carson, do you know what this competition thing is?"
Carson: "Nope. I don't really what to go."
Me (in persuasive/manipulative voice): "Did you know that you could win a ribbon if you're the best dancer?"
Carson: "WHAT?! I can win a ribbon?!"
Me: "Yep. You just gotta smile BIG and be the best dancer."
Carson: "I can do that!"

Big Smile. Check.

Best dancer. (Not to mention the only one on beat and not resembling a train wreck.)
Check.

Partner is a doll. (That always helps.) Check.

They win first place in the Pee-Wee division!
(Justin and I are on the sidelines... snapping pictures furiously... laughing hysterically... knowing how stoked this kid is going to be!)

 Sweet Victory!

Second time around is the Swing.
(He is pumped 'cuz this ribbon thing is fun!)
(Mom misses this dance because she is looking for ice because Ashton somehow manages to trip UNDER a table, receiving a huge goose egg in the center of his forehead. Mom makes it back just in time for the ribbon ceremony--out of breath.)
Will he win again?

 He does!

My deep thought blog moment: Of course, I have hopes and dreams for my children, but becoming amazing sports stars or dancers is not among them. Rather, I simply long for them to experience that feeling of confidence and satisfaction from doing their best... that sense of worth... that small moment of pure joy... like when you're six years old and you are handed a blue ribbon for winning a dance competition! Isn't a happy life just a collection of small, happy moments--making the drudgeries of everyday life worth it? This was one of those perfect, happy moments. For Carson and me.

2012 In Review

Here comes a NON-PHOTO post! (Not very fun. It's one for posterity, so go ahead and scroll over this entire long winded post to more entertaining ones below if you like!)

Here's a quick look at our family's 2012 in review:

* In January, Justin started a new job working for Motorfist, a company that builds and sells high performance snowmobile gear. He began in sales, traveling all around the country and Canada. During the 'busy' season, he was gone almost constantly. A few months later, he took on the position of Marketing Director, getting to do all things 'creative' for the company. Justin is decking all of our family and friends out in Motorfist gear, serves as a primary teacher in our ward, and loves playing in the snow with our family--whether it be snowmobiling, skiing, or building a snowman... as long as it's snow--he's smiling.

* In January, along with teaching 20 piano students a week, I also started a new job working for ConnectShare, a networking business. It was a unique job, and I found it very interesting to interview and write profile pieces for business owners in this region. As fun as it was, I was happy to QUIT six months later! The two jobs together were just too much. Phew! I serve in the Young Women's presidency, watch dance competitions and ball games, and drive drive drive my kids all around town all day long. My kids are my life and I couldn't be happier about it.

* In March, we sold our home in Quail Ridge and moved to a townhouse a few miles away. Though we moved out of the school district, we kept our kiddos at the same school.

* McKenna was thrilled to make the competitive Extreme ballroom team this year. It's very time intensive, but for now, she is loving it, and I love watching it! It was super exciting to see her take first place in "Swing" at a recent regional competition. (Almost as exciting as seeing Dancing With The Stars pro, Derek Hough, across the way at the same competition. Boy, I was STAR STRUCK!) McKenna also played softball this past summer and pitched for her team. Another summer highlight for her was being in the Miss Idaho Falls Pageant alongside her older cousin as a "Junior Gem." McKenna was thrilled to join Young Women's in October.

* Kyler began 2012 playing basketball (though he just endures this sport. Not his favorite.). He  had a blast in his first year of Little League Baseball as his team's pitcher. (Having two kids pitch just about put my nerves over the edge. Lots of pressure on those little pitchers--not to mention, their mothers!) The big event for him, however, was TACKLE football. Watching him put those pads on the first time felt like I was witnessing something truly sacred. Kyler has great work ethic and focus, and was a great little player! He started as running back, but broke his thumb just a few weeks in. It was sad, but his attitude was awesome--never missing a practice or game with his huge padded hand! He added a"Wolf" and "Bear"patch  to his Scout shirt. And lastly, Kyler has discovered the love of his life: Math.

* Carson continues to live in costumes and almost always carries a toy weapon. He played soccer this year and started piano lessons with mom! He attended one of McKenna's ballroom dress rehearsals and fell head over heals for those costumes, and begged and begged and begged and begged to take dance too. We finally caved, and it has been delightful to see his fun personality and great rhythm on stage! He has loved first grade, and is a really good reader. His teacher tells me that he is quite the "social butterfly." Are you surprised? I always smile when I walk down the hall at church because I can hear Carson's voice over the entire primary in singing time. He makes us (and anyone who know him) giggle everyday.

*  Ashton had a BIG year... He became a model for Motorfist--appearing in ads across the country wearing only a soggy diaper! He also started preschool this last fall.  Everyday, he insists that he's not going and makes me walk in with him until I can sneak out when he's not looking. With no help from Mom, he has learned all of his letters (upper and lower case), their sounds, and his numbers. (I'm pretty sure it was those Leapster shows!) He also surprised me by typing in his name to set up a profile on a video game. Not sure who's teaching this kid--but he's super smart! With the incentive to start preschool, Ashton also FINALLY got potty trained. Wah-ooo! This past winter, Ashton learned to ski in one day and tears it up alongside his siblings! Ashton loves his Dad, his Dad's i-pad, Caleb Warner, his brothers, the alphabet, balls, and going out to lunch with Mom.

Art Lesson

For Christmas, McKenna wanted one thing:
To Paint!
She has loved seeing the paintings of her Aunt Brooke and has dreamed of canvases and brushes ever since! Santa came through for McKenna this year, and she couldn't wait to get to work. On Christmas day, she set out all of her supplies and went to town... only to discover how hard painting actually is. She was quickly and utterly defeated. However, an amazing thing happened later that week... Uncle Mike (professional, out-of-this-world-amazing artist and husband to uber-fun Aunt Sue) came to visit!! He could not have been more generous with Kenna--spending hours with her! They viewed art online, sketched and sketched, mixed colors... It was fascinating for the whole family to watch his craft.  With a little guidance from a master, a new world for McKenna was opened!

He painted a simple (yet amazing) pear on the right, instructing McKenna to copy it.

A few hours later, McKenna had completed her very first painting. She was SO PROUD of herself--a complete reversal of emotions from Christmas Day. It's amazing what a good teacher can do... teach, motivate, and inspire.

Twins

Do you know how people will say that your kids look just like you? I'm great at analyzing the inherited features of other families--phenomenal, actually. But when it comes to seeing myself in my children, I can't see it... That is until last week. While at my mom's house, she happened to have a picture of Kyler and I at the same age next to each other... and I finally saw it!
Exact. Same. Face.
Fortunately for Kyler, he inherited his Dad's much lovelier skin (making him quadruply cuter).
P.S. I LOVED those heart jeans!

Even More Homework

While I'm posting about school work, I must document this gem... one sure to go down in "Stevens Family History!" Of course, something this bold could only come from the mind of Carson! I should have known that something was up when Carson asked me how to spell the "B" word!
